Billy literally bolted as if he did indeed have Canadian geese chasing after him. Kind of ballsy given his whole spiel. It was an accident. I don’t want to date. And then the crowning excuse: Bad guys are after me, so I’m gonna leave to protect you.

Dick.

Brandy ate another donut. When the door—which she’d not yet gotten her lazy ass up to lock—swung open, she expected to see Billy. Because, hello, as her mate—and according to countless romance books—he shouldn’t be able to resist her.

Instead of a sexy detective, she got Ulric.

“Oh, it’s you.”

His eyebrow arched as he drawled, “Wow, way to stroke my ego.”

“As if any part of you needs stroking.” She wrinkled her nose. “Why are you here?”

“Didn’t Billy tell you?”

“Billy said a lot of things.” Most of them dumb. Like him.

“Pack your stuff and get ready for an exciting staycation at Chez Lanark.”

“I am not going anywhere.” She stuck her feet up on the table. Crossed her arms. Did every childish maneuver she could think of.

“Gonna throw yourself on the floor and pound it while screaming if I say too bad?”

“Maybe. I just don’t see why I have to leave my apartment. The two guys who came after me are dead.”

“There’s still someone else out there.”

“So Billy claimed. And then he left. Tells me I’m in danger. Because of him. And then out the door he goes.”

Ulric winced. “I agree his decision was kind of odd. But that’s Billy. He looks at things differently on account he’s a cop.”

“A cop who left to make himself bait.” Brandy swung her feet off the table and leaned forward, huffing, “I can’t believe he actually left.”

“If it’s any consolation, the place he’s going is very familiar to him. He’ll have the upper hand there.”

“Or paw. Maybe he’ll be able to shift without the moon again.”

Ulric offered a non-committal, “Maybe.”

“Does he often run away?” she asked boldly.

“Actually, this is a first. Guess you scared him good with the relationship thing.”

Had she come on too strong? Too bad. She wasn’t about to lie about what she wanted. “What if this enemy he’s created never appears? How long will he stay in hiding?”

“He can probably do an easy week or two before his work gets antsy. He’s worked hard on his career. I can’t see him tanking it.”

Two weeks. Surely she could wait that long. Give him his space. Then confront him.

“What’s he so hung up about? And don’t tell me his parents. Surely a smart guy like him knows they’re not indicative of most relationships.”

Ulric snorted. “You’d be surprised. Do you know what age he had his vasectomy?”

“He said young and before he knew anything about Lycans.”

“The guy had himself sterilized at twenty-one. I’d say whatever he experienced with his parents, they traumatized him good.” Ulric’s soft claim had her chewing her lower lip.

“But how will he ever learn differently if he can’t make it past a few dates?”

“Few?” Ulric whistled. “In college, Billy was known as the one-night-stand man. He never slept with the same woman twice.
